When the Chicago Zoo and Aquarium opened in 1975, it was the only zoo in the world.
Now, as the world’s largest in size, it’s poised to open its doors to the public for the first time in its history on September 25.
But before that happens, its future is still a bit up in the air.
“It’s an open question whether we’ll be able to keep the zoo open in a sustainable way,” zoo president Mike Vukovich told The Verge at the zoo’s new building, built on the former site of the former Detroit zoo.
“We’ll be seeing what happens, and I think a lot of people are hoping for a big turnaround, so that we can bring back some of the zoo culture that we’ve lost.”
That includes a huge renovation, the biggest in the city’s history.
Vukovs current plan calls for the zoo to be fully refurbished by 2020.
A new, expanded zoo will open in 2021.
And it’ll be a much more open zoo than its current location.
A few years ago, Vukovic said the zoo had lost roughly 10% of its animals.
Today, it sees a healthy zoo population of more than 100,000 animals, with another 200,000 added every year.
But the zoo is struggling to keep up with the increasing demand, with a big part of its budget devoted to conservation and breeding.
And that’s what Vukoviks staff is now focusing on.
“What we’re trying to do is have a zoo that is going to have a sustainable future,” Vukovan said.
“The animals are here, but they’re not doing as well as they should.”
Conservationists say that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Vazvovic says the zoo will focus on its own conservation program, but the goal is to get its animals back into the wild.
“In the last few years, we’ve been working with the zoos around the world, so we’ve had to take a lot more action to make sure we have animals back, to help them to recover, to be healthier and to be able for them to reproduce,” Vuzovich said.
But that’s still not an easy task.
“If we can’t bring back those animals, then we’re going to lose them,” Vulkovic said.
The zoo currently has about 100 species of reptiles, mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, reptiles and amphibian species.
It has more than 20 mammal species, and Vukovois staff hopes to increase that number by 10% every year for the next five years.
And if they can’t keep up, it will be closed for a period of time.
That will happen sometime between 2019 and 2021, when the zoo plans to reopen, as planned, to the general public.
That’s a lot longer than Vukova said he thought it would be.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be in 2021, 2019, or 2020,” Vakovic said of the plan to reopen in 2021 in order to re-introduce the zoo.
He says it will also likely be a decade before the zoo reopens, but it will depend on how long it takes to rehabilitate its animals and make them suitable for public use.
“One of the things we’ve done is try to develop a plan for rehabilitating our animals,” Vuckovich said, noting that it would take several years to do this.
“But we can still try and rehab animals.”
For the time being, the zoo hopes to rekindle its old dinosaur collection, which has been moved to a new building at the north end of the grounds.
That would mean a lot fewer animals, but Vukovos staff will still be able keep those animals in their current cages.
Vakovics staff also plans to create a new “tent city” for the animals.
The new tent city will be the home of the new zoo’s zoos main attraction, which will be a huge new display of animals and plants from around the zoo, Vuckoviks said.
There’s also plans for a new, renovated animal exhibit, where a lot will be kept and a lot less will be moved around.
There will also be a new exhibit for the public that will house a lot even more animals, and more plants.
But in the interim, the animal exhibit will be shuttered, with the zoo moving all its animals to the “fences” at the south end of its new building.
That way, Vikovs staff will have more space to display the animals, as well.
The park will also have a new visitor center and a new entrance to the zoo building, and the zoo has a new playground, a new reptile pond, and a big new enclosure for the animal show.
The big difference now is that the zoo would be using
