The Des Moines Zoo will be closing its doors in 2019 and moving to a new building on the zoo’s campus in 2019.
The Des Moines Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (DMWRD) is expected to take over the zoo from the city of Des Moines.
The city will take over operating and maintenance of the facility.
The zoo’s former home was demolished in 2015 and the city is currently seeking a developer to build a new, 20,000-square-foot zoo.
The new site will feature a zoo-like theme park, a water treatment plant, a new water treatment station, a zooski and a fitness center.
The $60 million zoo will be a new addition to the zoo that will open in 2020.
